Your Child’s Tooth Development and Care

Your Child’s Tooth Development and Care

November 16, 2015 By Drs. Grant and Conger

Your Child’s Tooth Development and Care

Even before birth, a baby’s teeth are beginning to form, so if you are expecting a child, optimizing your own dental health is a great first step towards taking care of his or her teeth and gums. When pregnant, you should eat a nutritious and balanced diet to make sure you are getting the vitamins and minerals that are so essential to your baby’s early growth. Getting regular dental care to identify and address tooth decay and gum disease is also important. Pediatric dentists help to manage oral health for infants and children after they are born.

The Development of Kids’ Teeth

While the onset of teething varies with every child, most children’s primary teeth will begin to appear when they are around six months old. By the time your child is three years old, he or she should have a full set of 20 primary teeth. Between the ages six and 11, these baby teeth will be lost, and the permanent adult teeth will erupt. Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, will not erupt until your child is between 17 and 21 years old.

When to Visit a Kids’ Dentist

By the time your child reaches six months of age, your pediatrician should be able to tell you if dental problems are likely to occur. Your own dental history and the condition of your teeth and gums can be a strong predictor of your child’s risk. If your pediatrician thinks your child is likely to develop early dental problems, consult a dentist as soon as possible. Most pediatric dental experts recommend that your child visit a dentist no later than his or her first birthday or six months after the appearance of primary teeth. Dental issues caused by injuries, disease, or developmental problems should be addressed sooner.
