Will Implant-Supported Dentures Work for You?

Will Implant-Supported Dentures Work for You?

October 10, 2014 By Drs. Grant and Conger

Will Implant-Supported Dentures Work for You?

If you are like most adults, you may have lost teeth to gum disease, injury, or other causes. Losing several teeth can make smiling with confidence a real challenge, but implant-supported dentures may be the perfect way to reconstruct your self-esteem. Unlike traditional dentures that sit on top of your gums, an implant-supported denture is fastened to implants surgically placed inside your jawbone. You won’t need messy creams, and you’ll never have to worry about your dentures falling out of your mouth or making strange sounds.

How Implant-Supported Dentures Work

If you don’t have any teeth in your jaw, but you do have adequate jawbone to support multiple implants, an implant-supported denture may be the ideal option. Special attachments fasten or snap onto the implant base for a secure fit. These affordable quality dentures are usually created for the lower jaw since regular upper dentures rarely need extra support, but they can be crafted for both upper and lower jaws.

Ball-Retained and Bar-Retained Dentures

Two types of implant-supported dentures are available. Both designs include a pink or gum-colored base made from acrylic; the base holds natural-looking artificial teeth custom-made to fit your mouth. Bar-retained dentures rely on a thin metal bar attached to implants placed in the jawbone. Either the bar or denture is fitted with fastening devices. When placed over the bar, the denture is secured by the clips or fasteners. Ball-retained dentures, also called stud-attachment dentures, are held in place by ball-shaped metal parts that attach directly to implants in the jaw. When the balls are aligned with corresponding sockets on the denture, they connect to keep it secure. Both denture types are effective and aesthetically pleasing. If you are seeking implant-supported dentures, your dentist in Dalton can determine which type is best for you.
