General Dentistry 101 - Get the Facts about Dental Checkups

Most general dentistry professionals recommend having a checkup and professional dental cleaning twice a year; this allows your dentist to look for early signs of decay and other problems that you may not yet see or feel. If disease is found, a treatment program can begin immediately. The earlier dental problems are detected, the more easily they are managed. If you have a history of gum disease, a weakened immune system, or medical problems like diabetes, you may need to visit your dental clinic more often.

The General Dentistry Comprehensive Exam

A comprehensive dental exam not only checks for cavities and gum disease, but also analyzes your mouth, jaw, head, and neck. You will likely receive a comprehensive exam if you are a new patient or haven’t seen your dentist in a long time. If necessary, your dentist may order X-rays to obtain more detailed images of your teeth and jaw. Here are a few more things you can expect:

  • Your head, neck, salivary glands, and lymph nodes will be manually examined for signs of inflammation and tenderness.
  • Jaw function and temporomandibular joint health will be evaluated.
  • Your dentist will look for lesions on the soft tissues inside your mouth including your lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat.
  • Gums will be evaluated for periodontal disease.
  • Your dentist will determine if your teeth and jaw meet together properly.
  • Existing dental work such as crowns, fillings, dentures, and bridges will be checked for stability.
