Diabetes and Diligence: Managing Dental Care

Diabetes and Diligence: Managing Dental Care

October 19, 2015 By Drs. Grant and Conger

Diabetes and Diligence: Managing Dental Care

Many American adults suffer from some degree of periodontal or gum disease. It can range from mild irritation to serious damage to gums and supporting tissues that keep teeth in place. In the worst cases, it can even cause tooth loss. If you are diabetic, you are even more vulnerable to gum disease; this is especially true if your blood sugar levels are not kept within your target range. If you already have gum disease it may be more difficult for your body to fight other infections, as gum disease can cause higher blood sugar levels. To protect your oral and general health, paying close attention to dental hygiene and taking care of gums is essential.

To prevent the onset of gum disease or manage existing problems, maintain strict control over your blood sugar levels. If they are not within your target range, talk to your doctor about changing lifestyle factors or medications to improve your control. Brush your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, and floss each day. Be sure to press the floss against your teeth and not your gum tissues. Rinse your mouth with water after consuming sweet or starchy foods to help eliminate food particles that could adhere to teeth. Check your gums regularly for signs of inflammation such as redness, soreness, swelling, or bleeding. Diabetes and dental care go hand-in-hand, so be sure to always follow a proper gum care routine.

Trust Your Dentist to Care for Gums and Teeth

Find an affordable dentist and schedule regular exams and dental cleanings to stop problems before they start. You should see your dentist at least every six months and any time you have symptoms of gum inflammation or other dental problems. Before having any dental procedures performed, remind your dentist that you are diabetic. If your blood sugar is not under control, your surgery may be delayed until you can get it within target levels.
