Assessing the Need for Orthodontics

Assessing the Need for Orthodontics

Assessing the Need for Orthodontics

People need orthodontics for many different reasons at many different stages in life. Orthodontics aren’t exclusively kids or teens. Orthodontics can include cosmetic dentistry and implants or help very young children address early issues with permanent tooth eruption and jaw growth. Braces and retainers can correct teeth and facial irregularities, such as a “bad bite” (an overbite or under bite), straighten teeth, eliminate gaps, and appropriately align teeth and lips. Whether these conditions are a result of trauma, genetics, or irregular growth patterns of the gums and jaw, family orthodontics experts can effectively diagnose and treat them.

Unlike routine visits to the dentist, trips to the orthodontist are a personal decision and are optional. Orthodontics can enhance chewing or speech and improve appearance by realigning teeth and jaw lines. These attributes give many people greater self-confidence, improving mental and physical health outcomes.

Although cosmetic in nature, orthodontics can provide substantial benefits to your lifelong dental health—a main reason for investing in braces for kids. Straight and properly aligned teeth are easier to care for and brushing and flossing is easier, helping to lower the risk of tooth decay. Orthodontics can also prevent gingivitis—inflammation of the gums—which is a precursor to periodontitis, the more serious form of gum disease that destroys the bone around the teeth.

Orthodontics also can be beneficial your general health. Those with a misaligned bite may achieve added overall health benefits from orthodontics, since a bad bite can lead to issues with chewing, inhibiting nutrient absorption of certain foods. Speech difficulties can also be caused by a bad bite or misaligned teeth, often requiring a combination of orthodontics and speech therapy. Correcting a misaligned bite with braces can help to prevent premature wear of back teeth surfaces. Each time you bite down, your teeth are put under a substantial amount of force. Front teeth that don’t align properly can lead to greater wear and tear on the back teeth.

Braces can benefit anyone, but the treatment is more complex for adults. This is why screening your kids for orthodontics after the age of 7 is valuable to their future health. Correcting oral issues and getting the proper dental care at an early age can improve outcomes for life and affordable braces or orthodontic payment options are available.
